Songs about heaven gave joy to millions who, having little freedom or joy on earth, looked forward to a day when the wrongs would be righted.

Everything that brought Job joy had been taken from him, but he refused to live in despair. He chose to place his hope in God. He could not explain why he lost everything, but he trusted in the One who knows all things. Instead of being driven away from God, his heart drew closer to Him.

“I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!” (Job 19:27).

Do not wait until you face persecution to long for heaven. There is a risk of falling in love with the things of the world so that your love for God grows dim. Do not place your hope in your possessions or relationships on earth. The only true hope you have awaits you in heaven.

Father, You are all I need. May my heart long to be with You more than with anyone or anything in this life.

No matter how passionately they pray, God does not seem to answer. Job found himself experiencing this loss.

“Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away” (Job 16:6).

A dark night of the soul is not a punishment from God. Quite the contrary, it is a compliment. God knew that Job would pull through the situation and become stronger. God uses periods of spiritual quietness to help Christians determine if they will still serve Him even if they do not hear Him, feel Him, or receive blessings from Him. The dark night of the soul demands that you worship God for who He is rather than for what He does.

Always present God, I know You are with me even when I do not feel You. Help me to trust You regardless of my feelings.

If you would like more God's Word for Today, purchase a physical copy here.
</a10:content>

Ultimate Power

Job 9:1 through 12:25

<a10:content type="html">
In 2018, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson of Iceland became the World’s Strongest Man. An athlete’s performance in the vehicle pull, the car carry, the anchor carry, and the dead lift determine who will win the title of World’s Strongest Man. Few would want to get into a street brawl with Björnsson.

Job found himself in a contest with one much stronger than Björnsson. Job wrongly thought his adversary was God, but he understood it would be foolish to try to assert his will against God’s. Listening to the description of God given by Job reveals his great reverence of God. Job chose to submit to God’s will even though he desired something different than he was currently experiencing. Job placed himself in the hands of one more powerful than himself.

“He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south” (Job 9:9).

Recognizing the power of God is essential. It is only when a person recognizes God’s power that they will confidently trust Him with their lives.

Almighty God, remind me of Your strength and encourage me to trust You with my whole life.

Walker’s friends and family offered advice that was in their best interest, not his. He found himself paying bills for more than seventy other people! Many of those “friends” disappeared when he experienced financial ruin.

Likewise, Job’s friends offered very little comfort when he faced his darkest hour. They told him what he should do to escape his pain, but he was wise enough to resist their “wisdom.” Job’s friends did not have God’s perspective of Job’s situation.

“Now you too have proved to be of no help; you see something dreadful and are afraid” (Job 6:21).

It is important that you surround yourself with people who know God and love you. It is easy for people to offer advice out of their own wisdom. It is much more difficult to find friends who will pray with you and listen for God’s solution. Be willing to resist the advice of people who do not have your best interest at heart.

Wise God, help me to find friends who will advise me to follow Your will.

Sadly, the baby was stillborn. The father grieved. He stopped going to church and eventually walked away from the faith. He refused to worship a God he felt took his son from him. He could not reconcile how a good God could allow this evil to occur.

The Bible tells the story of a man who was faced with a great deal of heartache. Job’s family and wealth were taken from him in a series of unexplainable events. Instead of expressing anger toward God, he chose to worship God.

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship (Job 1:20).

How do you respond when you face trouble in your life? Do you try to find somebody to blame? Do you become angry? Do you walk away from God? How you respond to difficulty reveals your true character and what you really believe about God. When you have trouble in life, turn toward God instead of away from Him.

Father, help me to turn to You even when I don’t understand what is happening.

In the United States, just the mention of Independence Day or D-Day causes people to remember what happened on those important dates.

The mention of Purim reminds the Jewish people of how God protected them. Purim reminded the Jewish people that God recast the pur (lot) that Haman had cast against them. During the month of Adar (March), the holiday reminds the Jewish people that no matter how bad their lot may look, God has their best interest at heart.

The month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration (Esther 9:22).

You were dead in yours sins. Then, one day, God changed your lot in life. You accepted Jesus as your Savior and you began to walk on a different path. Instead of death, you are now experiencing life. Your mourning has been turned into joy. This should be a source of celebration. Consider establishing a holiday commemorating the day when God saved you.

The most infamous attack took place in Nazi Germany during World War II. Hitler designed a plan to eliminate every person of Jewish heritage. Heroic efforts by the Allied Forces foiled Hitler’s plan. The tables were turned, and Hitler’s regime was annihilated.

Like Hitler, Haman organized his forces to destroy\ God’s people. He felt that they were a threat to him and to his people. He convinced the king to sign an order to kill all the Jews in one day. He might have succeeded had God not stepped in and turned the tables on Haman’s plans. Instead of the elimination of Mordecai and his people, Haman was eliminated.

So they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. Then the king’s fury subsided (Esther 7:10).

Today it is popular to ridicule Christians who assert the truths of Scripture. Many Christians in the world suffer persecution for their faith. Some people would love to see Christians eliminated. But that will never happen. God will protect His Church.

Protective Father, help me trust Your ability to preserve my life.

Each person makes the decision based on the criteria they consider important.

But God has His own criteria for selecting the people He wants to lead. He seldom selects the most qualified person to lead His people. Moses was a killer with little confidence. David was the youngest son of his family and ignored by his father. And Esther was an orphaned Jewish girl with no hope for a future in Persia.

Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother (Esther 2:7).

People should never disqualify themselves from service to God because of their background. God uses those considered useless by others. When God calls you to serve, believe that He will equip you to accomplish the task. If you don’t know where to start, ask God to tell you what to do. When God completes the work, be sure to give Him the glory.

God, equip me to accomplish Your will, and send me wherever You desire.

While not all churchgoers are spiritually flawless, to make a decision about Church attendance based on the character of others is foolish.

Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find that the Jewish people were not following through on their commitment to obey God’s commands. Nehemiah did all that he could to correct the problems. He did not give in to the temptation to compromise. Nehemiah understood that God would judge him based on his actions alone.

Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services (Nehemiah 13:14).

It is tempting to make excuses for one’s spiritual failures based on the failures of others. A Christian might attempt to justify a life of compromise because he sees others in the Church compromising Christian values. Christians must understand that one day we will stand before God and He will evaluate our actions. Holy God, remind me that You alone are my judge.

Many Christians are willing to give a few dollars, but the idea of giving 10 percent of their income to a local church seems unreasonable. Today the average Christian gives just over 3 percent to all charities combined.

When the people of Israel sought to reestablish their relationship with God, they demonstrated their desire through their willingness to give a tithe of their possessions to God. Tithing became a priority for them because they desired to please God and recognized His place in their lives. The people declared:

“We will not neglect the house of our God” (Nehemiah 10:39).

God’s requirement that His people tithe was a means to see the true heart of the person. God does not need money, so giving does not benefit Him. Giving is for the believer. It demonstrates whether a person is generous. It also reveals their priorities. His mother came in and explained that, while it is sad that Tommy couldn’t see his grandfather every day anymore, his grandfather was with Jesus now and no longer had any pain. This thought gave Tommy a small sense of relief.

When the people of Israel heard the Law for the first time, it caused their hearts to break. They realized that they had been displeasing God for years. This caused great sadness among the people. Nehemiah helped redirect their thinking.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Satan would love to get Christians to live in condemnation for sins of the past that God has already forgiven. But God does not hold your past against you. After you have repented of your sins, He wants you to experience the fullness of joy that comes with salvation.

Forgiving God, remind me that You forgive and that there is no condemnation for those who trust in Your Son.

Yet Eleanor chose not to respond, but instead continued to do her job as well as she could. She also asked God to give her extra strength, and then she left everything in His hands. Nehemiah did something similar.

They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.” But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands” (Nehemiah 6:9).

Nehemiah’s critics posed a real threat to his restoration work, yet he disregarded them. He just kept working as he asked God for increased strength and direction.

Although Nehemiah needed the favor of the king of Babylon, he first approached the King of the universe.

“Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was the cupbearer to the king (Nehemiah 1:11).

Nehemiah wanted to use a work-related connection— his relationship with the king—to advance God’s plan. God answered Nehemiah’s prayer when the king allowed Nehemiah to travel to Jerusalem to rebuild it.

Do you serve God on your job? Do you look for ways to use job-related connections to advance God’s purposes? God has positioned you where He wants you, just as He did Nehemiah. Regardless of your job, God wants to use you where you are. Father, please open doors and give me the boldness to walk through them.

Ezra mourned in a traditional way as he demonstrated his disappointment at how the Jews had married pagan women. Still, he eventually ceased mourning to seek God’s presence and solution.

Then, at the evening sacrifice, I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands spread out to the Lord my God (Ezra 9:5).

The situation that grieved Ezra involved other leaders who had violated God’s clear instructions regarding marriage. Likewise, we should mourn and pray whenever Christians violate God’s clear instructions.

Ezra took the sins of the people personally, and repented and mourned on their behalf before God. His first response wasn’t to accuse the others of the failure through confrontation, but to spend time on his knees to hear God’s heart on the matter. When you see others in sin, your first response should be grief and prayer to discover what God thinks.

Merciful God, remind me to grieve over and pray for those trapped by their sin.

Assembly is usually much easier if you first read the instructions and then follow them.

The Jews returning to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the temple also needed to follow the instructions God gave them in the Mosaic Law. God also provided them with Ezra, who had studied the Law carefully and could teach it to all the people.

For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel (Ezra 7:10).

The Lord’s provision of instructions as well as a teacher provided comfort, direction, and inspiration to the returnees.

God provided instructions for Christians in the Scriptures. He also provides the Holy Spirit as a perfect teacher. Through these, Christians have access to a source of comfort, direction, and inspiration.

God, thank You for Your Word and Your Spirit. Help me to learn from both as I follow You.

The thought of marrying Tom filled her with joy. The reality of walking down the aisle alone reminded her of her father’s recent death. The Israelites also cried tears for the past and smiled with joy for the present during construction of the second temple.

But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy (Ezra 3:12).

Tears came when older people remembered what the temple meant to them, but others responded with joyful exuberance at the rebuilding. Their poignant and jubilant response was appropriate for the new hope they all felt.

Christians also can feel both joy and sadness as they remember their relationship with God. John seized the opportunity and moved his family back home. Filled with hope, he and his family packed their belongings and headed back to the place they felt at home. In some ways, John’s experience recalls emotions some of the Jews must have felt when King Cyrus told them they could go back to Jerusalem.

“Any of his people among you may go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them” (Ezra 1:3).

One Sunday morning, a young man brought his eight-year-old daughter to their classroom. “Remember me?” he asked. They blurted out together: “Sammy!” Twenty years before, Sammy had been in their class. He told them, “I’m in seminary now. But, when I was my daughter’s age, you were the first to tell me about Jesus!”

During the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David. Then in the twelfth year he began to purify Judah and Jerusalem, destroying all the pagan shrines, the Asherah poles, and the carved idols and cast images (2 Chronicles 34:3).

Never underestimate the depth to which God touches the hearts of children. He changes their hearts through the words, actions, and attitudes of parents, Sunday School teachers, children’s workers, and others willing to tell them about Christ.
A powerful enemy entered the land of Judah. After Hezekiah consulted his officials and military staff, he ordered the repair of the walls and towers of Jerusalem, and they stopped the water supply outside the city to prevent the Assyrians from enjoying it. He encouraged the people not to fear but to trust that Lord would fight for them. Then Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah cried out to the Lord in prayer. God sent an angel to annihilate the Assyrian army and save Jerusalem.

When facing life’s battles, enlist the help of experts and prayer warriors. Soft worship music played as they offered prayers of confession and commitment to the Lord. The prayers, like those offering them, weren’t perfect, but God honored them.

Hezekiah reinstated the Passover Festival after cleansing the temple and consecrating the priests. Many people scorned the festival and did not attend; others came, but failed to purify themselves as the Law required. Hezekiah prayed for these Israelites.

Hezekiah said, “May the Lord, who is good, pardon those who decide to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors, even though they are not properly cleansed for the ceremony.” And the Lord listened to Hezekiah’s prayer and healed the people (2 Chronicles 30:18–20).

Like Hezekiah, believers today should pray for those who may be trying to do the right thing in a wrong way. God honors every step of faith.

Ahaz, king of Judah, had turned to idols, so the Lord allowed the kingdom of Israel to defeat him in battle. Many soldiers died, and their wives and children were taken, along with great plunder. The prophet Obed warned the Israelite soldiers to send the slaves back home, so the soldiers obeyed by clothing and feeding them before their release.

Prisoners of war were often badly treated in ancient times. No international standard existed for prisoner treatment the way it does today. But God’s Word was clear that the prisoners should be treated with kindness.

Where the prisoners of war expected judgment and mistreatment, they instead received food and clothing and even a return trip home! Instead of judgment, they found mercy. Anytime you choose to extend mercy to someone when you could judge them, you are setting a prisoner free and pleasing the Lord.

Show the same grace to others that God has shown to you.

He could pay off his car loan and credit card debt. However, his real joy was being able to contribute to an organization that helped broken families who were living on the street, transforming them through biblical counseling, parenting classes, and job training. His wanted to participate in the work God was doing in the lives of these people, so he gladly gave an offering to this ministry.

This pleased all the leaders and the people, and they gladly brought their money and filled the chest with it (2 Chronicles 24:10).

Joash, the king of Judah, commanded the people to pay their taxes and bring offerings to repair the temple in Jerusalem, pay skilled workers, and purchase the furnishings. All the people gladly responded and rejoiced because they could invest together in God’s project.

The Lord offers opportunities to participate in His restoration plans by placing on people’s hearts the desire to not only build a church or support a mission, but to help heal someone’s life.

As a result, many people have reunited with birth parents, siblings, and cousins. The family tree can reveal stories that are pleasing, or ones that are shocking and embarrassing.

When Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah of Judah, learned that her son was dead, she began to destroy the rest of Judah’s royal family (2 Chronicles 22:10).

Joash, grandson of Jehoram and the king of Judah, learned firsthand that he came from a family in which his grandparents were murderers who tried to eliminate the line of King David. It was only because of his courageous aunt and secret protection of the high priest that Joash survived the massacres, allowing David’s dynastic line to continue as God promised.

A bad family history does not automatically lead to a bad life. You can choose to live for God regardless of what poor choices your parents or grandparents made.

Your past does not determine your future. Choose to follow God today.

A vast army approached the Israelites. Alarmed, Jehoshaphat inquired of the Lord and proclaimed a fast for all the people. God’s responded by telling the Israelites to not be afraid or discouraged but to let God fight the battle. They responded in faith, singing praises to the Lord and watching as their enemies destroyed each other. Those destroyed enemies left abundant plunder for the Israelites to take back to Jerusalem for the victory celebration.

Your battles may include family conflict, addiction, financial difficulties, a broken marriage, or uncertainty about a decision you need to make. When trouble is on the horizon, God wants His people to seek Him and trust in His guidance and protection. The difficulties in life can provide opportunities for your Heavenly Father to show He is a powerful protector, worthy of praise.

At times, nonbelievers see the Lord’s activity in the lives of His people and approach believers with questions. Tired of a life of sin (even before they know what they’re tired of), they’re looking for something—really, Someone—who can make the difference in their lives. Be prepared to share to gospel with non- Christians who are attracted by God’s power at work in your life.

Jesus has given His people the task of telling every human being the message of His death and resurrection, God’s remedy for the sin that separates humanity from Him. This involves each believer sharing the gospel with friends and neighbors. It also involves the ministry of those who share the gospel full time. Christians are to go into the entire world (Matt 28:18–20).

Do your part to share the gospel, and thank God when nonbelievers make it easier by approaching you.

Read a book or watch a video about sharing your faith with others. Then put it into practice!

Rehoboam became king over Israel after Solomon died. At the beginning of his reign, he sought advice from the elders that had served Solomon. They advised Rehoboam to treat the people fairly and with a benevolent hand. But then Rehoboam asked for advice from some young men he grew up with. They encouraged the king to handle the people harshly.

King Rehoboam unwisely chose to follow the young men’s advice. This decision divided the kingdom and drove many to follow a man named Jeroboam.

If you want good advice, surround yourself with wise Christians and listen to them. You may not always agree, but you will find that adopting wise counsel keeps you on God’s path.

He said, “My wife must not live in King David’s palace, for the Ark of the Lord has been there, and it is holy ground” (2 Chronicles 8:11).

Although politically savvy, Solomon’s marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter signaled the beginnings of Solomon’s insensitivity to God. King Solomon later married hundreds of foreign wives who turned his heart away from true devotion to God. They worshipped other gods, and Solomon followed them straight into idolatry.

Believers must be careful what they allow into their lives and who they choose to partner with. The Bible says not to marry an unbeliever. But even close friendships can hinder faith in Christ.

Are your close friends believers? How do your friends impact you? How do you impact them? Consider your relationships carefully, because bad company does corrupt good character (1 Cor 15:33), just as it did with Solomon.

His faithful love endures forever!” At that moment a thick cloud filled the Temple of the Lord. The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of God (2 Chronicles 5:13–14).

Occasionally God manifests His glory in a special way. Some people call these mountaintop experiences, and they can thrill the soul. Sometimes we experience His presence more subtly. Either way, God promises to inhabit the praises of His people.

During the worship celebration to dedicate the temple, God’s presence became visible. The musicians played and the singers sang. God’s presence became so thick that the priests could not perform their duties.

Times like those are precious, but Christians cannot live for them.
There in front of the Tabernacle, Solomon went up to the bronze altar in the Lord’s presence and sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings on it. That night God appeared to Solomon and said, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” (2 Chronicles 1:6–7)

That night God appeared to Solomon and told Solomon to request anything he wanted. Solomon did not ask for riches, long life, or victory over his enemies. Instead, the young king asked for wisdom to better govern his people. God offered Solomon a “blank check,” but Solomon didn’t use it for his own desires. Instead, he asked for what he needed to benefit others.

To receive godly wisdom, you need to have a heart like Solomon, one that desires to work in the best interest of others.

His desire reflected a heart longing to glorify his Creator. David knew God’s mercy well, and he clothed himself in humility. Even though David dreamed of building the temple, God told David that someone else would fulfill that assignment.

“God said to me, ‘You must not build a Temple to honor my name, for you are a warrior and have shed much blood’” (1 Chronicles 28:3).

God told David that his son, Solomon, would build the temple. David did not recoil or rebel at this command. Instead, he welcomed the Lord’s instruction. God communicated to David the plans for building the temple and David provided them to Solomon.

David was content to allow someone else to carry his dream forward. He accepted that another king would take credit for the temple because he desired to glorify God, not himself.

Sometimes the dream God places in your heart serves to prepare the way for another who will actually see it fulfilled.

Not everyone is called to sing or play on a worship team, but everyone is called to worship the Lord. When David established a worship team, he set part of it aside for prophetic ministry.

The Scripture tells believers to be filled with the Spirit by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit (Eph 5:18–20). Prophetic worship is simply hearing what the Holy Spirit is saying and declaring it through song. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to be your worship leader.

You do not need a beautiful voice to worship God. You just need to have a heart for God and ears attentive to His voice.

Be sensitive to the Spirit’s direction during worship.
</a10:content>

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

<a10:content type="html" />

The God Who Answers

1 Chronicles 21:1 to 23:32

<a10:content type="html">
David built an altar there to the Lord and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And when David prayed, the Lord answered him by sending fire from heaven to burn up the offering on the altar (1 Chronicles 21:26).

Christians reading inspirational articles often see “the power of prayer” described as the force behind a more positive life. On closer examination, however, the writer’s concept of “the power of prayer” may be little different than the power of thinking positively or the art of self-talk.

In biblical teaching, however, prayer has power for only one reason: The Almighty God hears our prayers and answers them. He has given believers constant access to Himself by sending Jesus to remove the guilt of sin. Whenever you spend time in prayer, take a few moments to consider the God who answers. Remind yourself that He is your loving Father. Focus on one of His many promises to those who believe, and trust that prayer is truly powerful only because He has made Himself available to you.

Depend on God’s power.
</a10:content>

Keeper of the Promise

1 Chronicles 17:1 to 20:8

<a10:content type="html">
When we get married, we promise to love one another “til death do us part.” Unfortunately, not everyone honors their marriage covenant. They prove untrustworthy. Only God is always completely trustworthy. David understood this when he responded to God’s promises about the future this way:

“It has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O Lord, it is an eternal blessing!” (1 Chronicles 17:27)

God makes His children many promises, among them forgiveness, guidance, and eternity. When you ask, He forgives all your sins. He does this because Jesus—your King, your Great High Priest who lives forever—paid for them on the cross. He guides you daily through the indwelling presence of His Spirit. And He also promises to prepare an eternal home for you where you will serve and praise Him forever.

You can be certain, just as David was, that God will keep the promises He has made to you.

God will never break His promises.
</a10:content>

Inviting God's Presence

1 Chronicles 13:1 to 16:43

<a10:content type="html">
You can recognize a wedding invitation before you open it in the mail. The appearance usually gives it away: a square envelope with a seal. People use invitations to formally invite someone to an important life event. It is a way of communicating the important role someone holds in another person’s life.

“It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul” (1 Chronicles 13:3).

King David invited the presence of God by bringing the ark of the covenant to his new capital: Jerusalem. The ark represented God’s presence with His people. David, in contrast to King Saul, wanted God’s presence to be central to his reign as king. Bringing the ark to Jerusalem symbolized David’s desire to keep God at the center of the kingdom.

Through acts of repentance and faith, you invite God’s presence to be the center of your life. He faithfully responds by sending His Spirit as the seal that you belong to Him and that He abides in you.

He gave Saul a wise advisor in Samuel the prophet. God gave Saul every chance to obey Him, but Saul refused.

Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium (1 Chronicles 10:13).

Because Saul was unfaithful to the Lord, he lost his life and his kingdom. God searched for another man who would serve Him faithfully. Even though David was far from perfect, his love for God drove him to repent when he sinned and to do everything in his power to please the Lord.

Choosing to disobey God will cause even the most anointed person to miss out on God’s plan for his or her life. When you choose faithfulness to God like David did, however, you place yourself in a position where God can bless you and those around you.

God returns faithfulness for faithfulness. When you seek to please Him, He will guide your steps.

Shallum was the son of Kore, a descendant of Abiasaph, from the clan of Korah. He and his relatives, the Korahites, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the sanctuary, just as their ancestors had guarded the Tabernacle in the camp of the Lord (1 Chronicles 9:19).

Shallum and his family began working security for the entrance to the temple. This sacred duty had been handled by members of the family going all the way back to when Moses led the Israelites in the wilderness.
Ministry leaves a legacy in families. Whether you are a preacher, a Sunday school teacher, a church janitor, or parking lot attendant, your service makes a mark on your children and grandchildren that will leave them a rich heritage.

Scripture doesn’t reveal the size of the enemy force, but given that the Israelites took more than 100,000 enemies captive, they must have been massively outnumbered.

The Bible tells us the reason for their victory against overwhelming odds.

They cried out to God during the battle, and he answered their prayer because they trusted in him. So the Hagrites and all their allies were defeated (1 Chronicles 5:20).

In the midst of the battle, the warriors let out a battle cry to the Lord, and God fought for them to secure their victory.

When Christians go through battles and face overwhelming odds, it’s never too late to cry out to God. Even in the middle of the fight, He will hear your prayers and respond. Your battle cry can move God to unleash the armies of heaven and turn the tide of the battle.

As he took apart the frame, a folded piece of paper fell out. It turned out to be a first edition of the Declaration of Independence. Only five hundred were printed, and only twenty-three other copies survived. The document sold at auction for $2.42 million. That man literally found a lost treasure.

Shaphan also told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” So Shaphan read it to the king. When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair (2 Kings 22:10–11).

Hearing the Book of the Law broke the king’s heart. Shocked at the nation’s departure from God’s commands, the king repented and began making immediate national reforms to return the nation to godliness.

Too often we lose the valuable treasures God places in our lives. When found and put in use, these gifts become treasures that transform our communities.

The Assyrian field commander publicly declared Judah’s inability to resist their enemy. He said if Jerusalem surrendered it would avoid siege and defeat, and that trusting in the Lord to deliver them would result in catastrophe. Hearing this, Hezekiah tore his clothes and put on sackcloth.

After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the Lord’s Temple and spread it out before the Lord (2 Kings 19:14).

Hezekiah depended on the Lord to deliver His people. That night, the angel of the Lord put to death 185,000 of the Assyrian troops. While the lighthouse used specialized lenses, its powerful light still shockingly came from oil-burning wicks. Since then the source of the light has been upgraded several times and is now an LED bulb.

A surprise in the history of Judah is that the son of wicked king Ahaz was Hezekiah, a king who determined to be a light to his nation.
